Avenger

Grumman Avenger
The Grumman Avenger - the name so well defining the purpose - started to come into service early in 1942 and quickly became one of the key players in the Pacific conflict. Well designed and robustly constructed, it had the reputation of having the flying characteristics of a truck, flown from both carrier and Pacific island bases the Avenger was the state of the art torpedo bomber in WW2. As with many classic aircraft the Avenger served well past it’s sell by date and was in use by the UK Fleet Air Arm well after 1953 - with some degree of irony the later versions also served with the post-war Japanese forces.
The image depicts part of an Avenger group about to fall on Japanese naval forces in the Pacific. The farthest aircraft has already popped the bomb doors to allow the quickest maximum loss of height.
