Fallen Eagle - Luftwaffe Portfolio
Fallen Eagle

An Me109E sits in an English field in November having come second best in a most recent combat. For the disconsolate Luftwaffe pilot the well worn phrase of the time ‘for you the war is over’ strikes home hard. A 64 Sqdn RAF Spitfire wheels overhead checking that he is well and truly down.

A common occurrence in the winter days after the Battle of Britain when the Luftwaffe ‘boys from Abbeville’ would often run intruder missions into southern England. The 109 shown is in the markings JG 52 based in France during 1940/41 while the Spitfire is in 64 Sqdn livery flying out of Hornchurch, close to London.

The composite is constructed from airshow photos of the Me109 and Spitfire and the b/g from my archives.
