Stalingrad
The string of Ju 52s on the approach to a winter airfield near Stalingrad depicts the most dramatic use of the Ju 52 by the Luftwaffe during WW2. In November 1942 Goering undertook to air supply the encircled 6th Army at Stalingrad. A nonsensical solution to the Army problem which resulted in an average of 120 tons supplies arriving per day instead of the 5 - 600 needed for even modest 6th Army operations.
The Ju 52 was a great favourite with the Luftwaffe and in use in all war theatres from Europe to North Africa and the Russian Front - it was affectionately known as ‘Tante Ju’ or ’Iron Annie’.
