During the extended daylight missions conducted by the 8th Air Force in WW2 any straggling B17 was much relieved to be helped home by P51 Mustangs. These long range fighters were known by the bomber crews, with great affection, as 'Little Friends'. The composite image depicts such an action - B17 and P51 pics from airshow photographs and high level skyscape from own archives.
