The Mk XIX Spitfire was the final development of the Photo-Recce series entering service in 1944. This Griffon engined model laid claim to many firsts being the first piston-engined aircraft to attain a service ceiling in excess of 42,000 ft and consequently the first fighter aircraft to use a pressurised cabin. With a range in excess of 1,500 miles and a top speed above 460 mph the Mk XIX was the final episode in the Spitfire story.
Image is of a Mk XIX flown from Duxford shown against a high-level skyscape from my archives.
